The author, Werani Zabula maintains that improving the regional transport sector and making it more cost effective will productivity, profits and development for the SADC region. For SADC to reach its goals of regional and economic integration and poverty reduction, access to raw materials and markets at affordable is a fundamental basis for global productivity and trade competitiveness. The Okavango by Solar Sloop

Alternative Power Systems Africa (APSA) has introduced their boat, the Solar Sloop which is powered entirely by the sun. The boat was launched in the northern panhandle, where the Okavango river floodwaters peak before flowing into the Delta. For the flat bottomed aluminium boats that ply the Delta, fuel is not only costly, unsustainable but causes pollution. The Solar Sloop is specially designed to hold panels on the roof enabling it to catch as much sunshine as possible while also providing shelter for the sailors. With the world concerned about responsible tourism in the light of preserving our environment, what better way than using solar power as a principle means of transport.

Kwai River bridge

The Palapye.com weblog has alerted us to news from the Botswana Press Agency (BOPA) about progress of construction of a more durable bridge over Khwai River to facilitate movement of tourists in and out of Moremi Game Reserve through the northern Khwai gate, part of a wildlife conservation and management project co-funded by the government of Botswana and European Union.

The end of the first month of 2008 leads us to look at the Botswana Government's Press Agency (BOPA) review of news highlights of 2007. A selection of items relevant to Okavango region planning:

February - The African Union adopts Botswana's position on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.
March - Some 111 former residents of the Central Kgalagadi Game Reserve return to the reserve following a High Court ruling that their relocation was unconstitutional.
May - The Botswana Council of Non-Governmental Organisations refutes allegations of its association with opposition parties and Survival International (SI), a London-based organisation, which was against the relocation of Basarwa from the Central Kgalagadi Game Reserve.
May - US Ambassador, Mrs Catherine Canavan, promises to help market Community Based Organisation (CBOs), engaged in tourism, through the regional, commercial Competitiveness Hub.
September - Government declines South African Air link bid to buy Air Botswana. Minister of Works and Transport, Ms Lesego Motsumi, says cabinet declined the proposals because it did not meet Botswanas air transport requirements and did not support governments wider objectives for the development of the transport and tourism sectors.
October - A suspected outbreak of foot and mouth disease is reported in the Habu Extension area near Nokaneng in Ngamiland District (Zone 2).
