UNEP transboundary freshwater governance conference

The BIOKAVANGO Project Water Component Manager Geofrey Khwarae attended the UNEP High Level Conference, Strengthening Transboundary Freshwater Governance – The Environmental Sustainability Challenge in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 20 – 22, 2009.

The overall objective of the Conference was to strengthen transboundary freshwater governance through promotion of the environmental dimension, and to serve as a platform to exchange views, share experiences and develop common positions and priority actions. Additionally, the Conference was a forum to promote IWRM and discuss how it can be implemented at the transboundary water management levels. More specifically, the Conference discussed issues such as participation of stakeholders in transboundary water resource decision-making processes that have a direct impact on the environment.

Mr Sekgoa Motsumi, District Environmental Coordinator for the Department of Environmental Affairs represented OKACOM while Mr Phera Ramoeli, the SADC Senior Program Manager represented SADC at the conference.
The main outcome of the conference was the Bangkok Plan of Action, which recommended actions to improve governance of cross-border freshwater resources. See a fuller discussion of the conference activities on the International Water Law Project Blog.
