African Water Facility (AWF) operational

The African Water Facility is an initiative of the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW)to mobilize resources from donors to finance water infrastructure and water investment-facilitating activities in Africa. Some of the areas of intervention include integrated water resources management (IWRM), capacity building, legal and institutional reform, knowledge and information building and dissemination, development and implementation of regulatory frameworks, effective management of shared waters, monitoring and evaluation, environmental management, and strategic capital investment programmes and projects implementation.

The African Development Bank Board of Directors is responsible for the general functioning of the water fund facility, and approves the projects and programmes financed under it, as well as its annual budget and financial statements. The operational programme for 2005 to 2009 was released at the end of 2005.
