Opening Ceremony of the Flood Pulsed Wetlands International Symposium

The much awaited Flood Pulsed Wetlands International Symposium opened at the Maun Lodge this morning. Dignitaries included the Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Minister Onkokame Kitso Mokaila who gave the opening address, the University of Botswana Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs, representatives from OKACOM, and the HOORC staff. Salient points mentioned included the importance of maintaining the diverse ecosystem, information management of the data collected, the need for good governance systems and the importance of forming regional and international strategic partnerships in projects like the e-flows and the Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis project. Funding for monitoring activities was cited as one of the major challenges that organisations like HOORC face . However, the creation of more inter-disciplinary research which address flood pulsing holistically is one factor that can help resolve this challenge.
