New in HOORC's Library: local institutions and the democratisation of development in Botswana
Invisible upkeep : local institutions and the democratisation of development in Botswana : a case study of village development committees in Ngamiland by HOORC researcher Barbara Ngwenya, looks at the influence of government institutions on local communities' use of natural resources in Botswana in the context of Village Development Committees' contribution to democratisation of development programmes. Ngwenya's study found that, while the committees have no statutory mandate to allocate natural resources, in practice some CBNRM organizations in Botswana include committee officials in their management structures, and some committees have become experts in negotiating for government funding for projects identified as priorities by their communities. You can find the report in HOORC's Library.
