Artisanal fishing and social issues

Traditional fishing basket from the Okavango

HOORC researchers Ketlhatlogile Mosepele, Barbara Ngwenya and associate Ted Bernard have published a study, Artisanal Fishing and Food Security in the Okavango Delta, Botswana as a chapter in the 2006 World Sustainable Development Outlook. The study revealed that at least 40 per cent of households in 22 Okavango Delta communities depend on artisanal fishing as a first strategy in response to food insecurity. Results from the larger study were presented at the World Association for Sustainable Development conference in Naples, Italy last week. Another portion of the same study, the impact of HIV on artisanal fishing in the Delta, was presented as a poster at the Seventh Waternet Symposium in Lilongwe, Malawi at the beginning of November.
