The National Geographic Society's Sustainable Destinations Resource Center web site offers practical tools to increase local industry and communities' knowledge about sustainable tourism and destination stewardship. The Gateway Community Toolkit and Creating a Geotourism MapGuide accompany a set of sustainable tourism resource directories.
The Society recently conducted a survey with Leeds Metropolitan University to evaluate 115 of the world’s best known places based on six criteria that pertain to cultural, environmental, and aesthetic integrity. The resulting 2005 National Geographic Traveler Destination Scorecard gives South Africa's Kruger National Park a high six ranking in the survey and the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania a middle ranking of 17. The Okavango Delta is not included in the scorecard.
