Buffalo fence killings anger farmers

The Ngamiland farming community has expressed deep disappointment at what they regard as overzealousness on the part of the Department of Veterinary Service (DVS) when department officials kill cattle that cross the Buffalo Fence into the delta area. Though the farmers accept that the killing is in keeping with the requirements of the World Organisation of Animal Health (OIE), to which Botswana is a signatory, they question the department's culpability in the whole affair.
The farmer's bone of contention is that ''there is no buffalo fence to talk about'' as the fence has not been maintained for years.
As the chairperson of the Ngamiland West Integrated Farmers Association (NWIFA), Simon Bojosi, noted: ''We have been calling for the proper maintenance of the buffalo fence at the various fora that included kgotla, stakeholder's meeting, council meetings and even parliament our MPs have been raising this issue but no avail.''
