African sacred groves : ecological dynamics & social change edited by Michael J. Sheridan and Celia Nyamweru and published by Ohio University Press in 2008, questions the perception of sacred forest sites as relics of ancient woodlands from a precolonial past through a collection of case studies from across Africa. A chapter by Liz Alden Wiley, Are Sacred Groves in Sub-Saharan Africa Safe? looks at legislative support for conservation of these sites, concluding that while direct legal support for sacred groves is limited, opportunities for protection are being brought about through the new legal construct of community forests. You can find the book in HOORC's Library.
