Geospatial datasets for Africa

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has published a new report defining fundamental geospatial datasets for Africa. The report is the first attempt to provide a continental common definition of a minimally necessary core of geospatial data and information products to which policy makers can add other sectoral datasets to ensure geographic consistency in making decisions on socio-economic development issues.

The report, compiled by EIS-Africa and the South African Human Sciences Research Council, proposes a definition of fundamental data sets and identifies ten fundamental data themes: geodetic control network, imagery, hypsography, hydrography, boundaries, geographic names, land management units, transportation, utilities and services, and natural environments.

You can find the report online.
