Botswana CBNRM study

Community-based resource management, rural livelihoods, and environmental sustainability, prepared for the IUCN South Africa office and USAID FRAME programme, by Jaap Arntzen, Baleseng Buzwani, Tshepo Setlhogile, and HOORC researchers Professor D. L. Kgathi, and M. R. Motsholapheko, reports experience in CBNRM in Botswana through two case studies. Sankuyo Tshwaragano Management Trust’s community-based wildlife management programme at the edge of Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta is an example of a hunting-based, high-revenue community based activity, while the Kgetsi Ya Tsie women’s veld product project in the Tswapong Hills area of eastern Botswana is a case of a community business dependent on a more insecure resource rights base. The report claims a measure of success for both cases and draws lessons for future CBNRM activities. You can find the report online and in HOORC’s library.
