The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Destination Web Watch scheme was launched in November 2005 as part of a project to help destination management organisations (DMOs) maximise their spending on website development and online marketing. The objectives of the project are to: encourage and help DMOs enhance the quality of their web activity and systems, enable DMOs to assess the performance of their web sites, in relation to those of peer DMOs, facilitate co-operation among DMOs with regard to web activity and to encourage innovation of products and services, enhance understanding of the key factors that influence the effectiveness of web sites, and offer practical and affordable services for DMOs. While the site offers services to tourism operations for a fee, it also contains freely acessible case histories and links.
