HOORC's library has received Volume 20, no. 6 of the journal, Hydrological Processes, a special issue from the Japan Society of Hydrology and Water Resources. Of particular interest to Okavango planners is the article, "Development of Decision-Making Indicators for Ecosystem-Based River Basin Management" by Takehiro Nakamura. The article proposes an alternative to lengthy and complicated analysis of ecosystem functions: a simplified set of indicators for valuation of river basin ecosystem goods and services to use in decision-making. The article reports the application of these indicators to the whole of the Yangtze River Basin through techniques developed by the UNEP-Habitat-Chinese State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) project to assess vulnerablity, flood mitigation and management in the basin, and argues that their use provides sound management guidance.
